Remember how every story is made of micro-stories?
This post is about that.
You can go check that first.
No need to. But I'll wait.
Done?
Great. Welcome back.
Now let me tell you how I was made:
After dating for 8 years, my parents got married and divorced in 11 months.
The inciting incident was Dad going missing (again) on a 2-day bender. As one does.
After dumping his hungover ass, Mom took a beach trip with a friend to regroup.
Guess who shows up at the beach house, uninvited, singing sappy boleros with flowers and wine?
You guessed it: Mr. Lord Bender himself.
An empty promise here, a little sweet talk there, and boom!
Yours truly enters the chat ✌️👶
The word in the street is that I was made on the beach.
As in, the sand.
Ew.
That was the last time my parents were together as a couple.
Let's count how many mini-stories we have in there.
(imagine we're counting along with a bunch of kids like in Sesame Street)
1. After 8 years of dating:
The story about how they met.
How Dad used to drop Mom home and then go out partying.
2. Married and divorced in 11 months:
The hungover proposal.
My uncle fighting a guest at the wedding.
How both my parents spent what would be their wedding anniversary alone.
3. My dad's 2-day bender:
Trying to pick up a co-worker and failing.
Trying to pick up the waitress and failing.
Calling ex-wife for a drink and succeeding.
4. Mom took a beach trip with a friend to regroup.
Mom's friend's telling her a story about a missing distant relative. (This is Chile in 1984)
The whole conversation driving to the beach house.
5. shows up uninvited, singing sappy boleros with flowers and wine.
Grandma telling my dad to eat sh1t and die when asking on what beach she was.
Dad driving around "El Quisco" for hours, searching for my mom's friend's car to find the beach house.
6. Yours truly enters the chat.
The nurses in shock watching a baby come out of the womb with a perfect flying kick.
7. I was made on the beach.
Ew.
8. That was the last time they were together as a couple.
Dad driving back alone.
After not talking to Dad in months, Mom receives the news of her pregnancy.
Phew!
So many spin-offs.
I am convinced you can take some of those mini-stories and remix them into something better.
3 possible remixes:
Drunk man calls his ex-wife to tell her how impressive his kid's flying kick is.
Woman gets the news of an accidental pregnancy, and the doctor recognizes her as the bride at the wedding where he was beaten up.
A bunch of soldiers returning from disappearing people bump into a couple having sex on the beach, unsure what to do with them.
The possibilities are endless.
Now off you go.
Go pen down your mini-stories.
With a little mix-and-match, you might invoke the happy accidents Godess for a date and succeed.
See you on Monday!
Matias.
